Mappa Cartographica presents the first Georgian edition of the travel atlas of Jacques François Gamba—French traveler, merchant, and the first Consul of France in Tbilisi. The atlas brings together over sixty lithographs and maps, more than half of which are related to Georgia and the Georgians. Among them are a large panoramic view of Tbilisi and (presumably) the first sketch of Sukhumi made from the sea. The atlas features Georgians living in various regions of Georgia, as well as crucial secular and religious structures. A Megrelian, an Imeretian, a Georgian prince... Surami Fortress, Minda Fortress... Bagrati and Gelati Cathedrals... The majority of the sketches belong to the French artist and Caucasus researcher Jean-Marie Chopin, while the lithographs created based on his drawings were prepared by Godefroy Engelmann. The atlas is accompanied by an introductory text in Georgian, French, and English, written specially for this publication. Gamba’s atlas, together with his two-volume work, stands as the finest description of early 19th-century Georgia and much of the Caucasus. The first Georgian edition of Gamba’s travel atlas was printed exactly two hundred years after its first French edition.
